igen showcased at AoC/ALP Skills Conference

igen has been part of the Foundation Learning Pilot in Leeds and is now in the phased implementation stage. Participation in Foundation Learning allows learners to benefit from the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF). The QCF is a new framework for recognising and accrediting qualifications. The intention is to make both the system and the qualifications offered more relevant to the needs of employers and more flexible and accessible for learners.

The success and experience igen has had with QCF was showcased at the AoC/ALP Skills Conference ‘Delivering Skills for the Future: From Strategy to Reality’. A short video was produced for the conference highlighting the advantages of the QCF and how a commitment to training and staff development has led igen to successful implementation of the Framework.

Judy Dixon, igen’s Young Peoples Service Delivery Manager said: “The benefits for QCF for young people are that they can carry the qualifications forward. They have the opportunity to plan their progression which is important and they can also mix and match units to develop a personalised programme.

“igen’s strategy for implementing the QCF has been one of developing our full staff team, so we can deliver a quality service to our learners as soon as possible.

“Employers really want young people with the skills necessary for work and also to be functional in English, Mathematics and ICT. The qualifications we are delivering enable young people to develop these skills.

“We are really pleased that all our learners are progressing with QCF qualifications, including the three functional skills. Our pass rates are improving month on month and currently stand at 59%.

Foundation learning is being rolled out nationally to our Young People’s Division, using the good practice developed in Leeds.

Steve Higginbotham, igen Chief Executive said:

“I am thrilled that the hard work and determination of staff and learners has been showcased at a national level.”
