For 93 young 16 – 19 year olds in Northumberland Christmas came early. This is the number of unemployed (NEET) young people that igen Connexions Personal Advisershelped get into a job, training or educational opportunity before Christmas.
Head of Service Sally Weir said ‘Personal Advisers have set a new record in Northumberland for November. The number of leavers from NEET to positive starts is the highest progression rate this year. She added that outcomes like this are due to highly skilled knowledgeable Advisers and their network of equally skilled and supportive partners all pulling together to get a win: winfor everyone.
Success in gaining employed status Apprenticeships were secured by 15 young people. These Apprenticeships include Surveying, Engineering, IT, Hairdressing, Motor Vehicle, Media Design and Joinery.
One young person said “Thought I’d let you know I’m at the bus stop! Thanks for this opportunity, really appreciate it.”
A wide range of quality jobs with locally recognised training were also secured by 40 young people. These jobs included sales, administration and catering.
Best of all successful job starts were made by young people in all parts of the county from Berwick to Seaton Valley.
Although more of these jobs went to young people aged 18 (as there are more young people NEET at age 18) successes were also achieved by 23 young people aged16/17.
New opportunities continue to be needed throughout the county but especially in the South East to help keep NEET 16 – 18 as low as possible. The target is to hold NEET to 6.5% by 30 January 2012. If you think you can help please contact: Kim on 01670798 180
